Barrett Historical Society Museum Archives Coming Soon...

"The day that they freed me to dream and hope that one day my dreams would be real -- that was the day that I was born."

-Harrison Barrett

Over a Century of Heritage

1889-1989

150 Year Legacy

Barrett’s Settlement is a "Freedom Colony" created as a fundamental act of exercising civil rights. It is more than just a town, it was founded as a Strategic, Intentional Community built to provide safety, stability, and economic freedom to a population that was still being oppressed after emancipation. In this way, Barrett's Settlement is a Living Monument to the Texas Civil Rights Movement, demonstrating the struggle for equality from the ground up.
