Our MISSION....

Collect, preserve, share, and protect Historical Materials through the BHS Museum, Educational & Community Programs, Research and Publications. 

Our Vision is to promote understanding Barrett History and connecting with people in creative, intellectual, and inclusive ways, using resources to educate and inspire the public with meaningful heritage experiences. 

Our HERITAGE...

Barrett Historical Society was birthed out of the need to continue the legacy of its Founder, Harrison Barrett. 

Harrison Barrett (1845—1917) was born to slave parents from Louisiana, Simon and Eliza Barrett. He had three brothers and two sisters. After the emancipation of the slaves in 1865, Harrison searched for his family members. 

He was able to gather all except for one sister. 

In 1889 he purchased land east of the San Jacinto River in Harris County, Texas for fifty cents an acre, and named the area Barrett Settlement.  It was one of the largest land holdings in Harris County to be acquired by a former slave. 

The community began with seven houses, which Harrison built with lumber from his land. He set up farms, a sawmill, a gristmill, and a coffee mill. 

He also gave land to build Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
